World Record Measurement by Murphy Surveys

Murphy Surveys were delighted to confirm the measurement of the world’s longest Viking sword this week. The measurement took place at the National Ploughing Championships, and featured on RTE’s ‘The Ploughing Live’.

Surveyor Barry Rafferty and our Head of Survey and Engineering Department John Richardson confirmed the measurement.

The previous record was held in Hungary, with a sword measuring 13.5m. The Viking sword measured by Murphy Surveys is 21.86m!

The sculptured sword has been commissioned by Waterford City Council for their Viking Triangle Exhibition. The history of the Viking’s in Ireland has been carved into the sword by the sculptor John Hayes.

Click on this link – ‘The Ploughing Live‘ – to see the clip from the show, the measurement feature begins about 19:18 onto the programme.

Well done to everyone involved.
