YOUGHAL TOWN WALL CONSERVATION PROJECTKey Facts: Youghal Town Wall Conservation Project Client: Youghal Town Council & David Kelly Partnership Client Requirements: Youghal Town Wall, a medieval wall, which dates back to the 13th Century, had experienced considerable damage due to adverse weather over the last few winters. This prompted Youghal Town Council to appoint Conservation Engineers and Architects, David Kelly Partnership to assess the integrity of the wall in order to minimise damage to this regionally important structure. An integral part of this process was to carry out an extensive detailed survey of the structure. Murphy Surveys were successful in their proposal for this project. Murphy Surveys Solution: Utilising the latest in 3D Laser Scanning technology, Murphy Surveys delivered a complete 3D photo-realistic model of the Town Wall comprised of several billion individual points. From this model Murphy Surveys were able to extract highly detailed drawings of the structure to aid the engineers in their conservation work. This model will provide a template for exact stone-by-stone re-construction of this regionally important monument, should further damage occur in the future. This technology is becoming increasingly important in our day to day activities as a 3D world should equate to a 3D survey and model. Its true value lies in fast, safe and accurate capture and modelling of complex and detailed structures where a 2D representation is insufficient. |
